Dolphin kayak

Where: Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary

Company: Adventure kayaking SA

Price: $60 (for 2 people), or $40 (1 person) – self-guided.

I did the self-guided 2 people kayak tour. The options with a tour guide are a little more expensive – perhaps it would be a nice idea for doing solo but if you’re with someone else, I’d recommend self-guided. It’s not a huge area and it’s easy to go around without a guide – I prefer to be able to do my own thing, and not be held back by those slow at kayaking!

Searching for dolphins – none to be seen here.

I would definitely recommend doing this dolphin kayak due to how cheap it was – well worth the price. You get up quite close to the dolphins (there is a rule that you have to stay 50m away though). Being in a kayak means you are at a really good level – it’s nice being so low on the water to see them properly instead of from above like when on boat tours.

You get a 3 hour time slot (so only $10 per hour!), which is plenty time to kayak, and chill in particular areas waiting to spot some dolphins. We actually stayed in the one area for quite a while and this was a point when at least 5 dolphins were actually surrounding us, so there’s no need to kayak constantly.

Best time to go: We went on a weekday, and we saw loads of dolphins before even getting out on the kayaks. Weekdays are said to better than weekends for seeing dolphins here – there are less people and boats around.

It was a LOT of fun.
