Hiking Mount Srđ in Dubrovnik: Sunset, Views & Trail Guide

Hiking Mount Srđ in Dubrovnik is one of the best free things to do in the city – and an unforgettable experience, especially if you go (solo) for sunset, as I did.

As a solo budget traveller and hiking lover, being able to set out on a stunning hike right from my hostel just outside Dubrovnik’s Old Town gates earned the city big bonus points. It’s one of my favourite things I did in Dubrovnik. There’s nothing quite like an easily accessible city hike that rewards you with panoramic views over the Adriatic.

You may not have heard much about hiking Mount Srđ, but you’ve probably heard of the Dubrovnik Cable Car – one of the top things to do in the city! What you might not realise is that it leads to the same viewpoint as this hike. The view from the top – not the ride itself – is what gives the cable car its great reputation.

I preferred hiking Mount Srđ – it’s more adventurous, fun and rewarding, while offering uninterrupted views all the way up (and down!).

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about the Mount Srđ hike, including difficulty, elevation gain, trail details, and whether it’s better than taking the Dubrovnik Cable Car.

Mount Srđ Hike: How Long and How Difficult

From the trailhead, the hike to the top of Mount Srđ took me 40-45 minutes at a decent pace, including photo stops. Going more slowly? It’ll likely take around 60 minutes.

For regular hikers like me, the Mount Srđ hike is relatively ‘easy’. Yes, it’s steep, but the ascent is steady and non-technical. The terrain even makes it easy to move ‘quickly’ if you want (I left my hostel a little late, so tried to keep a good pace to ensure I beat the sunset!).

Mount Srđ stands at 412 metres above sea level. From the official trailhead, the elevation gain is around 255 metres. However, if you begin hiking from Dubrovnik’s Old Town, expect to climb 400+ metres.

Not an experienced hiker? Don’t worry – the Mount Srđ hiking trail is well marked and accessible. Just be ready for the incline – it will feel more like a moderate hike – and remember: it’s easy to pause for a breather and take in the views along the way. They are pretty distracting, in the best way, and help take your mind off the walk!

Quick Route Guide: Hiking Mount Srđ

Where Does the Mount Srđ Hiking Trail Start?

The trailhead is located along the main road, Jadranska Magistrala, and is clearly marked on Google Maps as ‘Mount Srđ Hiking Trail‘.

From Dubrovnik’s Old Town entrances – Pile Gate, Buza Gate, and Ploče Gate – it’s around a 20-25 minute walk to the trailhead. The quickest route will vary depending on which entrance you leave from, but they all climb uphill to connect with the main road and the start of the trail. The trailhead is clearly signposted, so you’ll know when you’ve found it!
✨I stayed in Love Dubrovnik Hostel, which was perfect for reaching the trail on foot.

Once you’ve reached the trailhead, here’s what you can expect:

Stage 1: Forest Section

The hike up Mount Srđ begins with a short forest section – this is the only shade you can expect on the trails! It does feel pretty ‘hike-y’ for the very first part; the path here is a firm dirt trail, slightly uneven with some roots and small rocks, but it’s pretty straightforward.

As you climb, the city seems to disappear, and you’re transported to nature – though soon enough, this section ends, and you’re reminded that this is Dubrovnik!

Stage 2: Zig-Zag Climb

After the forest, the trail completely opens up, and a zig-zag path of loose rocks leads the way to the top of Mount Srđ.

It’s pretty cool – a true zig-zag climb, back and forth, up and up, all the way to the summit. What makes it even cooler are the never-ending views over Dubrovnik, the Adriatic, and the surrounding islands. The climb is steady and completely open to the elements, so on a summer day, the trickiest part could be the blazing sun!

🌅 TIP: Hike for sunset – you’ll avoid the heat of the day and enjoy amazing sunset scenes!

Stage 3: Summit / Cable Car Area

At the top of Mount Srđ, you’ll find the cable car station, a restaurant, a large stone cross, and sweeping views along the coastline and beyond. There’s plenty of space at the summit – definitely a good thing, as it can get pretty busy with people who have hiked, taken the cable car, driven up, or are doing a zipline tour!

👀 TIP: For the best sunset spot, head to the right of the TV tower (the big mast at the top of the hiking trail – an unfortunate addition at the summit!) when facing out toward Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Here, you’ll find the most space and the best view as the sun disappears below the horizon.

Should You Hike or Take the Cable Car up Mount Srđ?

For me, as a solo budget traveller, hiking Mount Srđ was a no-brainer. The cable car was literally just 60m from my hostel, but I wanted the full Mount Srđ experience, not a quick ride to the top! Hiking is free, gives plenty of time to soak in the views on the way up and from the summit, and the trails aren’t too busy – my kind of vibe!

Most visitors take the cable car, which is quick and convenient, but for me, the hike was just as enjoyable as the views from the top. It really made the Mount Srđ experience stand out!

Hike vs Dubrovnik Cable Car:

  • Hike: Free, quiet trails, lots of time for photos, and more adventurous.
  • Cable Car: Fast (3–4 minutes to the top), convenient, frequent (runs every 15 minutes), and popular with most visitors – can get pretty crowded at peak times!

You can buy a one-way (€15) or round-trip (€27) cable car ticket, so you could even take it up and hike back down, or vice versa.

Short on time, willing to spend money, and after a relaxing city experience? Take the cable car.
Wanting a budget-friendly activity that is a true ‘adventure’ in the city? Hike.

Choose the option that suits your schedule, budget, and energy levels! Either way, you’ll be rewarded with the best views over Dubrovnik!

Hiking Mount Srđ at Sunset: My Experience

A visit to Mount Srđ is worth it whatever time of day, but catching the sunset makes it even more memorable. It might just be the best sunset spot in Dubrovnik.

Setting Out from Dubrovnik Old Town

I left Love Dubrovnik Hostel, already tired after a day exploring Lokrum Island. But I knew I couldn’t leave Dubrovnik without hiking Mount Srđ! The weather was perfect – a clear, warm September evening (I knew a good sunset was on the cards) – and this was the last chance to do the hike during my trip!

If you leave from in or around Dubrovnik Old Town, as I did, the climb basically begins immediately. You might not be on the official hiking trail yet, but it already feels like the hike has started. Dubrovnik is a city built on hills, after all! I didn’t mind – it actually soon made me feel reinvigorated, and I loved how quiet the streets were here compared to the crowds wandering the Old Town.

Soon, I reached the main road and spotted the trailhead sign – time for the good part to begin!

Climbing Through the Forest

Starting to climb through the forest section, I was so glad I’d set out on this hike. It felt like I was leaving the city behind, though I knew it was still right there just below me. I saw no one on this initial section, which felt crazy given how many people visit Mount Srđ (most just aren’t on the trails!).

After only around 5-10 minutes on the trail, the first views down over the city began to peek through the trees.

Zig-Zag Climb to the Summit

The terrain shifted to loose rocks, and the main climb kicked in. A few other hikers were ahead of me now, but not many, which made it easy to enjoy a peaceful, solo climb at my own pace.

I loved the zig-zag climb up the rocky trails, and soon overtook some of the hikers in front. The climb didn’t bother me at all – I was honestly too distracted by the views – more of Dubrovnik on show with every switchback. With vistas like this all the way up, it’s such a vibe!

Reaching the Summit

Before I knew it, I’d reached the summit. At first, it felt a little underwhelming – the communications tower is the first thing you see when arriving by trail, and it’s not exactly pretty! But walking around it, I reached the cable car area and restaurant. There are amazing views from here, but unsurprisingly, it was busy – a bit too much for my chill solo travel vibe.

Finding the Perfect Sunset Spot

The sun was still lingering, not quite ready to set, so I had time to find the best spot for me!

I wandered away from the busier cable car area and found a more open space with uninterrupted views, on the other side of the TV tower. There were plenty of others around, but everyone was able to spread out. It felt like a much more enjoyable spot to watch the sunset!

You really can’t ask for better views from the summit of Mount Srđ. From up here, you can pinpoint Dubrovnik’s main areas below, including the Old Town, Lapad, and Gruž. Lokrum Island, where I’d been earlier, is also in sight, along with Koločep, Lopud, Otok Šipan, and more – reminding you just how extensive Croatia’s network of islands is.

Sunset Magic

Soon, the sun began dipping below Lapad, with some of Croatia’s islands just to the right, and Dubrovnik glowing in the foreground – a perfect end to the climb.

I really lucked out that day – any clouds had dispersed, giving the sun full reign as it set. As it began to disappear, even more magic appeared – a vibrant orange shone above the Adriatic (which remained until darkness fully hit).

There was no doubt that a sunset hike up Mount Srđ was worth the climb! And it still wasn’t quite over – the descent awaited.

Descending Mount Srđ on a Sunset Hike

While I didn’t want to head back down so soon after sunset, I knew, especially as a solo hiker, it was important to beat the darkness on the trails. So I set off quickly, and surprisingly, despite all the people at the summit, there weren’t many others heading down this way – most visitors really do take the cable car!

The beauty of hiking down was that I got to enjoy the full remainder of the sunset scenes as I zig-zagged back down the open trail. The sunset sky was really showing off! I walked pretty quickly, knowing the short shaded forest section at the beginning (now end) of the trail wouldn’t be so fun solo in the dark. Luckily, there was still a little daylight in the sky by the time I reached it.

🌙 Descent TIP: If hiking at sunset, bring a small torch if you have one, or make sure your phone has enough battery for light and navigation – the lower forest section can get quite dark on the descent.

On reaching the end of the trail and beginning of the city streets, there was no stress. Streetlights led the way, and soon I was back by Dubrovnik’s Old Town after a magical sunset hike!

Practical Tips

  • Bring plenty of water and snacks
  • Wear sturdy shoes for uneven paths (trainers are fine)
  • Avoid peak mid-day heat
  • Bring a hat, sun cream, cover-up (there is no shade on the hike)
  • Start 1.5–2 hours before sunset for best timing
  • Bring a small torch or phone light for the descent

Other Things to Do at the Mount Srđ Summit

  • Panorama Restaurant & Bar – For a meal or drinks with arguably the best city views, head to Panorama Restaurant, which sits right beside the Cable Car station at the top of Mount Srđ. It’s best to reserve a table, especially if you’re visiting for sunset.
  • Zipline – If you want an adrenaline alternative, consider the Panorama Zipline Tour on Mount Srđ. Most tours include transport to the top, and zipping across the sky gives a completely different perspective of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic.

Is Hiking Mount Srđ at Sunset Worth It?

Expansive scenes of Dubrovnik, the Adriatic Sea, and nearby islands are stunning any time of day, but are made even more remarkable at sunset. It really is well worth hiking Mount Srđ at sunset – I’m so glad I did!
