I visited Nerja solo for a few days and had no idea what to expect before arriving. Going there on a whim, having done little to no research, I was so amazed by its beauty that I couldn’t believe I hadn’t known more about it. I am SO glad I ended up there!! How to Get to Nerja ✈️ 🚌 🚗
Getting to Nerja is super easy to do! Just a short trip from Málaga, the capital of Spain’s Costa del Sol, Nerja is the perfect addition to any Andalusia itinerary. Whether you’re flying into Málaga Airport or already exploring the city (like I was!), here’s how to make the journey hassle-free.
✈️ By Air
The closest airport is Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), around 65km from Nerja. It’s well connected with flights from most European cities, making it easy to reach, with budget-friendly flights, too!
👉 Tip: Check Skyscanner for the best flight deals into Málaga. Search for cheap flights to Málaga here
🚌 By Bus: Málaga → Nerja
I spent three nights in Málaga before deciding it was time to experience a bit more of Spain, so I (pretty spontaneously) headed to Nerja. I hopped on a bus from Málaga’s main bus station, which took me directly to the centre of Nerja. It was such an easy and affordable journey – ideal for solo travellers or anyone exploring without a car.
Bus Details:
- Journey time: 45–90 minutes (depending on the bus)
- Price: Expect to pay around €7-10 one way – prices can vary depending on when booked, and the time you book for. You can book your ticket in advance here.
- Departure points: Málaga Estación de Autobuses (main bus station) or Puerto Málaga (Muelle Heredia) – make sure you select the correct departure point when booking!
- Frequency: Regular departures throughout the day, from early morning to late evening.
✨Check schedules and book your tickets online here.
Tip: Even if you’re based in Málaga, buses are frequent enough and Nerja is close enough that a day trip is totally doable. That said, staying longer is worth it for the chill beach vibe! You might even want to base yourself in Nerja and day trip to Malaga for a little city action!
🚗 By Car – Málaga → Nerja
Want the most freedom and flexibility? Hiring a car is a great option – you can explore Nerja at your own pace and visit nearby gems like Frigiliana or Torrox along the way.
- Journey time: ~45 minutes from Málaga city, ~1 hour from Málaga Airport
- Route: Take the A-7 eastbound along the coast, then exit at Nerja (Exit 292)
- Price: Car rental costs vary depending on the company and season. Compare prices on DiscoverCars or Rentalcars.com.
- There are both free and paid parking options around town, plus free parking at the Nerja Caves.
Tip: Driving gives you the freedom to stop at scenic viewpoints along the coast, adding even more magic to your trip!
🗺️ Guided Day Tour from Málaga
If you prefer a hassle-free experience, a guided day tour is a great way to visit Nerja (with the added bonus of exploring the nearby town of Frigiliana)! It’s perfect if you only have a day to dedicate to Nerja, allowing you to see as much as possible without worrying about transport.
What’s included:
- A knowledgeable guide who shares the history, culture, and highlights of each location
- 2.5 hours exploring Frigiliana
- Visit the Caves of Nerja (entry included, ~80 minutes)
- 2 hours of free time in Nerja
✨ Check availability and book this Nerja & Frigiliana day tour here
Tip: Guided tours are ideal if you want everything organized for you – transport, tickets, and sightseeing – while still having some free time to wander and enjoy both towns. The guide adds extra insight, making the experience more enriching than simply visiting on your own.

Nerja is a charming coastal town with something for everyone – historic streets, stunning beaches, and incredible viewpoints. Whether you’re here for a day or a longer stay, looking for adventure or relaxation, these are the top things to see and do.
1. Plaza Balcón de Europa
The heart of Nerja, Plaza Balcón de Europa is the perfect place to start your visit – you can’t miss it. Located in middle of the town’s coastline, the coastal views from the balcony are impressive, with the Mediterranean Sea stretching to the horizon. The plaza is lively both day and night and offers:
- Shops, cafés, and restaurants
- Palm-lined paths leading to the iconic balcony
- Sculptures, including King Alfonso XII, who visited after the 1884 earthquake
- Benches perfect for relaxing or enjoying an ice-cream
- Street performers often add an extra element of entertainment
- A lively yet relaxed atmostphere
As night falls, Nerja’s famous balcony views fade into darkness, but the plaza lights up, creating a magical atmosphere with its illuminated palm trees, ensuring it remains welcoming and full of good vibes.
✨For a stay right by the heart of Nerja, the town’s most iconic hotel – Hotel Balcón de Europa, offers rooms right by the balcony, with stunning sea views. Check rates and availability here.

2. Cueva de Nerja (Nerja Caves)
One of the top things to do in Nerja (and one of Spain’s main tourist attractions) is the Cueva de Nerja. The cave system creates an incredible underground vision with its stalagmites and stalactites, while prehistoric cave paintings offer a fascinating glimpse into Spain’s ancient history.
Nerja’s Caves provide a unique and unforgettable experience, offering a striking contrast to the beaches and town.
Duration: 45–60 minutes ⏳
Getting there: 5-minute drive from town center 🚗, 10–15 minute bus 🚌, or ~45-minute walk 🚶♀️
💡 Tip: Book tickets online in advance to skip queues. Audioguides included in your entry provide an insight into the caves.
3. Beaches in Nerja
Whether you prefer coves or long stretches of beach, are looking for a lively beach experience or a more serene scene, Nerja has you covered with its many stunning beaches along the coastline.
Playa Burriana is arguably the the most renowned beach in Nerja, but I personally really loved Playa Carabeo. To be honest it’s hard to pick a favourite! Each beach has its own charm and characteristics and really, they are all worth visiting!
Let’s take a closer look at some of the picture-perfect beaches awaiting you in Nerja, including some activities you can do.
PLAYA BURRIANA
Playa Burriana is arguably Nerja’s most renowned and liveliest beach, and it’s easy to see why!
At around 800 metres long, there’s plenty of space for everyone to find their perfect spot. Whether you want to relax under a parasol, enjoy beach-side dining, or get active on the water, this beach has it all.
🌴 Why Playa Burriana is so popular:
- Long, wide stretch of soft golden sand 🏖️
- Lovely promenade lined with restaurants, bars, and shops 🍽️
- Water-sports activities available right from the beach, including kayaking and paddleboarding (guided tours available)🚣♀️
- Lifeguards on duty, plus toilets and showers for convenience 🚿
- Beach-side parking (fills up quickly!) and a larger car park about 300m away 🚗
🏨 Where to stay:
If you want to be right by the action, Boutique Rooms Playa Burriana is less than 200m from the beach – a top choice for comfort and location. See prices and availability here
For beach views, Apartamentos HC Burriana Playa offers apartments overlooking the sea – ideal for longer stays or families. Reserve your stay here

🌊 Water Sports at Playa Burriana
Playa Burriana is essentially Nerja’s main beach for water activities, so if you’re craving adventure, this is the place to be!
– 🚣♀️ Kayaking from Playa Burriana
Join the Guided Kayak Tour – Nerja Cliffs and Maro Waterfall for a 2.5-hour adventure along the coastline. You’ll get the chance to view Nerja’s cliffs up close and discover the beautiful Maro Waterfall (which can only be seen from the water!).
💡 Tip: Perfect for all travellers, especially if you’re solo and want to join a group activity. If you’re with a friend, you can even take a double kayak and paddle together!
🔗Book a kayak tour in advance here
Prefer to go at your own pace? No problem, you don’t have to join a tour. Simply rent a kayak and head out on the water as you please.

– 🏄 Paddleboarding from Playa Burriana
Prefer paddle-boarding? Perfect! You can opt for the Guided Paddle Surf Cliffs and Maro Waterfall Tour.
This 2.5-hour paddleboarding experience leaves from Educare Aventura, located right by the beach. Similar to the kayak tour, you’ll head along the bottom of the cliffs toward Maro Waterfall, but this time standing (or kneeling) on a board!
🔗Book your Nerja paddle-boarding adventure here
💡 Good to know: No experience? No problem! You’ll get an intro to paddleboarding before setting off, so it’s perfect even for beginners.
-⚡Adrenaline Adventure from Playa Burriana
Feeling extra adventurous? For something even more thrilling, join the Río Verde Canyoning Tour – a top-rated outdoor adventure leaving from Educare Aventura at Playa Burriana.
You’ll hike along the Río Verde river and have an adrenaline filled ~3 hours canyoning through the ravine, jumping into pools, sliding down rocks, and soaking in Nerja’s incredible natural scenery. 🌄
💡 Tip: This is an amazing activity for adventure lovers, while showcasing the beautiful landscape of Nerja’s surroundings. But if you’re not a fan of heights, you might prefer sticking to kayaking or paddleboarding instead!
🔗Reserve a spot on the Río Verde Canyoning Tour
PLAYA CALAHONDA
The beach that will catch your eye most from the Balcón de Europa mentioned above is none other than Playa Calahonda. This little gem of a beach sits right under the balcony, accessible through a charming archway which leads you onto zig-zag steps.
If you wish to spend the day here on one of the sunbeds (which look very inviting!), I’d recommend getting there early – there aren’t many for how popular this beach is! ☀️

PLAYA CARABEO
Playa Carabeo is a relatively small, sheltered bay a little further to the east of Playa Calahonda. I really loved this spot! ❤️
Despite being so close to the center of town, this beach feels more secluded thanks to the rocks surrounding it. I found this beach the perfect size, and when I visited, it wasn’t as busy as some of the nearby beaches (there are no bars or restaurants by the beach, and you need to descend to reach it).
There are also benches lining the walkway overlooking the beach (as you can see below), so you can even go and chill there if you don’t want to go down to the sand. 🪑🌊

PLAYA CARABEILLO
The next beach along from Playa Carabeo is Playa Carabeillo. Between which you can find Mirador del Bendito, a viewpoint on the walkway above these two beaches, which overlooks Playa Carabeillo. This is a great sunset spot!
The next beach along from Playa Carabeo is Playa Carabeillo. Between the two, you’ll find Mirador del Bendito, a viewpoint along the walkway above them that overlooks Playa Carabeillo. This is an amazing sunset spot! 🌇
To reach Playa Carabeillo, you’ll first have some beautiful views, and then be greeted by the steep steps that lead down to the sand. Depending on the tide, you can actually walk between Playa Carabeillo and Playa Burriana along the sand – a lovely little stroll to connect two of Nerja’s most scenic beaches. 👣

The beaches mentioned so far are all on the eastern side of the Balcón de Europa, but what about on the western side? There are plenty of beaches there worth visiting, too!
PLAYA EL SALON
The beach immediately on the western side of the Balcón de Europa is Playa el Salón.
This small beach feels almost like a private cove for guests of Hotel Balcón de Europa, but it’s accessible to everyone.
🏨 Where to stay:
If you choose to stay at Hotel Balcón de Europa, you’ll be right on this beach, and hopefully even have a room overlooking the sea – no doubt this adds to the hotel’s popularity! Reserve a stay in Hotel Balcón de Europa here

PLAYA LA CALETILLA
Also visible from the Balcón de Europa, just beyond Playa el Salón, is Playa la Caletilla – the second small beach you can see from the viewpoint.
Do note that this beach is even smaller, so don’t expect there to be much empty space during the busy summer months! 🏖️
💡 Tip: Perfect for a quick swim or a short sunbathing break if you’re staying nearby, but arrive early if you want a good spot!
PLAYA LA TORRECILLA
Playa la Torrecilla is the best beach on Nerja’s western side in terms of facilities and accessibility.
There are bars and restaurants overlooking the beach and nearby, sunbeds to hire, lifeguards on duty, kiosks, toilet facilities, and a beachside promenade. The beach is easily accessed directly from the promenade – no steep stairs here like at some of the eastern beaches!
🏨 Where to stay:
If you want prime access to Playa la Torrecilla, the popular Hotel Riu Monica has direct beachfront access and gorgeous views over the beach if you book a sea-view room! Check availability here
💡 Tip: Don’t miss the Mirador de la Torrecilla at the western end of the beach – it offers sweeping views of Playa Torrecilla and beyond, as well as Playa El Chucho in the opposite direction.

PLAYA EL CHUCHO
The next beach along is Playa el Chucho. It’s another easily accessible beach with a continuation of the promenade from Playa la Torrecilla.
Here, too, you’ll find lifeguards, sunbeds, toilets, and showers – everything you need for a relaxing beach day.
🏨 Where to stay:
Overlooking Playa el Chucho is the well-rated Hotel Perla Marina – another perfect beachfront accommodation option with beautiful sea views and easy access to both El Chucho and Torrecilla beaches. Reserve your stay here

PLAYA EL PLAYAZO
For a quieter beach experience, head a little further west to Playa el Playazo, Nerja’s longest beach.
There’s so much space for everyone, even during the busiest times! It’s the perfect spot to relax or take a long beach walk – with its 2km stretch of sand, you can easily enjoy a peaceful stroll from one end to the other. Or if you’re like me, it’s an amazing spot to add into a run – I ran along this beach early in the morning a couple of days, and it was dreamy!
🚗 Tip: Parking is readily available by this beach – ideal if you’ve hired a car and don’t want to take the ~30-minute walk from the centre of town. It’s also a great first stop if you’re visiting for the day and arriving by car.
🏨 Where to stay:
At the far end of Playa el Playazo sits the Ona Marinas de Nerja Spa Resort – an excellent beachfront accommodation option if you want to be right by the sea in a quieter area. See details and availability here
That sums up the main beaches closest to the center!! But keep going along the coast, and more beautiful and even quieter beaches will continue to present themselves!! There really are beaches for DAYS in Nerja!!
I’ll leave you to go and explore Nerja for yourself!! All I can say is, I loved my visit to Nerja and I didn’t want to leave after my 2 nights there were up. If you’re visiting the Costa del Sol, DO visit Nerja!!!!
